KAPS Transmissions Hydraulic Technology
- The latest in technology for the Subaru Impreza WRX STI has just arrived! KAPS Transmissions has developed a new Hydraulic Paddle Shifting system to adapt with the Fully Sequential 6 Speed Transmission.
- Evolving Technology
From racing syncro gearkits, to H pattern dog kits, KAPS Transmissions has always been at the forefront of cutting edge technology for the Subaru WRX STI. Three years ago, KAPS Transmissions moved even further ahead with the development of the Full Sequential 6 Speed Transmission. For drivers, this was a significant leap forward from the slower H pattern shift method. Now, KAPS Transmissions technology has evolved to paddle shifting where all gear changes happen in a few milliseconds. Developed from the most advanced components and first class engineering, the Hydraulic Paddle Shifting system combined with the KAPS Transmissions Full Sequential 6 Speed Transmission can create clutchless shifts close to Formula 1 speeds.
- Hydraulic functionality
The Hydraulic Paddle Shifting System runs via braded pressure cables to the pressure pump contained inside the transmission casing. The flick of the paddle either up or down send the electronic message to the KAPS Transmission computer unit to control the various pressure valves on the system to engage the next gear. The various components are explained for functionality below:
1 - Pressure Gauge – View pressure level
2 - Bleed Screw – Releasing pressure
3 - Hydraulic Safety Valve - Regulation of maximum pressure in the system (adjusted to 160 bars)
4 - Accumulator - Maintains pressure in the system
5 – Electronic Safety Valve – Maintains adjusted optimum pressure
6 - Main 3-way valve – Controls sending out the pressure from inlet
7 – Inlet – Return from the internal transmission pump to hydraulic system
8 – 2-way valve - Controlling the up and downshifts
9 – 3-way valve for regulation of out-pressure, oil from system to the internal transmission pump
10 - 2-way valve – Controlling the up and downshifts
11- Outlet – For shifting
12- Outlet – From hydraulic system to the internal transmission pump
13- Outlet – For shifting

- Intelligent Electronics
To obtain the best shifting possible, it is necessary to ensure the transmission itself contains intelligent electronics. KAPS Transmissions engineer an ignition cut control system that allows the car to accelerate and decelerate at its optimum. Flat shifting on the up and down shifts are no probem as all gear changes can have various settings for the ignition cut that tailors to the individual driver. This setup is extremely important in the ever changing race and road conditions that drivers may face. In comparison to the stock ECU settings, the KAPS Transmissions ignition cut electronic system allows for the flexibility of fine tuning that will have the car performing at its peak and will leave the competitors falling behind.
- Adaptability
The KAPS Transmissions Hydraulic Paddle Shifting System can be used with other cars other than the Subaru WRX STI. Its universal appeal can suit to other transmissions in various forms of race cars. The KAPS Transmissions Full Sequential 6 Speed Transmission is also universal in its application. With minor modifications to fit the front and centre differentials, all cars will have the opportunity to have gearshifts at close to Formula 1 speeds.
- Paddles
The paddles have a positive feedback and are produced from billet machined alloy that can adapt to most steering wheels. The KAPS Transmissions system uses a dual paddle system, one for the upshift and the second for the downshift.
